The spur gear mount is what carries the spur gear on the transmission shaft and holds it in correct alignment with the motor pinion. That alignment is the whole job. Gear mesh has to be set so the teeth engage on the correct part of the face, and if the mount lets the spur wobble or sit off centre, the mesh changes as the gear rotates. The result is a gearbox that runs noisy, wears the spur
